Diversity, Equity and Inclusion: Why Race Matters Inside Our Organization

In this two-hour, interactive workshop, Dr. Joanna Shoffner Scott will discuss racism as an embedded feature of today’s workplace environment. Drawing on more than ten years of research, advocacy, and consulting experience Dr. Scott will share the ways racism is baked into the structures that touch our daily lives both inside and outside of work. Given this historical context, it is critically important for organizations and agencies to turn inward. Often diversity goals are confused with equitable outcomes, while the real work of dismantling oppressive structures inside the workplace remains undone. The session will explore what it means to do racially equitable work in your current context. Dr. Scott passionately believes that conversations about race are important but taking concrete action steps to disrupt racism in our everyday work is a more productive step. this training session, Dr. Jaietta Jackson will provide a small group interactive training discussing current diversity, equity, and inclusion standards, laws, and regulations. This will be an interactive training session and will end with Q&A.

This training is free to OACAA members in good standing. Non-member registrations will be canceled.

Speaker Bio

Dr. Joanna Shoffner Scott, is an experienced management consultant with deep expertise in racial equity. She is the founder and principal of Stamey Street Consulting Group, LLC, and is a Senior Consultant with the Race Matters Institute of JustPartners, Inc. Joanna consults with organizations across the country to advance racial equity as a mission-critical goal. Current and former clients include government units, nonprofits, schools, and philanthropies. She has notable career experience in applied research, advocacy, government relations, and organizational management. She is an accomplished policy analyst in the areas of budget and tax policy, health, and nutrition. She brings an expertise that centers the intersection of race and equity in public systems. Joanna holds a Ph.D. in public policy from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.

About Approaching Race in Your Work

I build the capacity of organizations who want to be intentional about advancing racial equity in their operations, programming and professional development. I meet each of my clients where they are on their respective journeys and challenge them to do their work better and more equitably. I use a structural racism lens that builds on history, place, and sector. is an educator and communication consultant who began her teaching career in the Youngstown City schools. In 2004 she advanced her career as a Communication Professor at Youngstown State University. She is currently a Senior Lecturer and the director of the Public Speaking Basic Course. Jaietta has been invited to speak at many conferences and seminars to discuss her current communication research on diversity within the university setting. Her focus examines the collegiate success of Black males. She is the owner and diversity, equity, and inclusion trainer of her company one2one Communication Consulting. She has provided seminars and diversity training for small businesses and organizations including AmeriCorps Vista, MYCAP, and Suzie’s Restaurant on topics of diversity, culturally inclusive climates and equity.
