FLS Series: Conflict Resolution
We all know the impact being short-staffed has on productivity, efficiency, and overall departmental stress and tension. Now add on a staffing shortage that is not expected to end anytime soon. As if that is not enough, we are dealing with a pandemic.
When you add all these factors together, you can see why and how conflict can arise. On-going conflict influences our effectiveness when dealing with and communicating with each other. As you consider resolutions, it is critical to access the factors that are fueling the flame of the conflict.
This workshop will outline the process of conflict, conflict resolution, and the steps to successful conflict resolution.

Trent Grooms is the founder of T. Grooms & Associates, Inc., a human resources consulting firm established in 1986, and is living and pursuing the American dream. With more than 30 years of experience in the human resources field, Trent has seen and experienced a broad range of individuals and situations that have provided him with a wealth of knowledge and exposure.
Throughout his professional career, Trent has successfully translated the lessons he learned from competitive academics and athletics on the high school, college, and professional levels into the corporate business world. After graduating from Cleveland Central Catholic High School, Trent attended Kent State University on a basketball scholarship. He began a stellar collegiate career by becoming KSU’s all-time leading rebounder and the only player in KSU basketball history to record over 1,000 points and over 1,000 rebounds in a career. Trent remains KSU’s all-time leading rebounder, a record that has stood for over 37 years. Trent was drafted into the NBA, where he was selected by the Kansas City Kings and was inducted into the KSU Hall of Fame in 1989 and the Cleveland Central Catholic Hall of Fame in 2013.
During his time at Kent, Trent also received two bachelor of business administration degrees in business management, industrial relations, and economics. He completed his first degree in just over three years. Trent continued his education while completing 75% of a master’s in economics from the University of Akron before relocating for another career opportunity. Trent continued to develop his leadership skills by being names a Co-Captain of the Kent Varsity basketball team his junior and senior years. In addition, he was elected as the President of the Minority Business Association and named the “Scholar-Athlete of the Year” for all Kent State athletics for 1980.
Through his experiences, Trent has conducted staff development and skill enhancement training workshops for public and private sector employers ranging in size from small mom & pop organizations to Fortune 500 companies. Also, through T. Grooms & Associates and the Recruitment Alliance Network, Trent has actively conducted more than 50 municipal safety forces recruitment campaigns for Police Officers and/or Fire Fighters. Additionally, Trent has worked with members of the Community Action Network for approximately twenty years. On a personal note, Trent has volunteered as a youth basketball coach for 12 and 13-year-old youths, actively participated in fundraising for the American Cancer Society “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer,” was a ten-year participant in the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program, a United Way Loaned Executive, and was the former Chairperson of the Goodwill/Easter Seals Business Advisory Council (BAC).
Trent’s extensive experience, training, and direct exposure and interaction with a broad range of individuals, situations, and environments have provided him a perspective that is well suited and compatible with the current environment and challenges that many organizations will face in the years to come.
