One of the greatest privileges of my first months as Executive Director of OACAA has been the opportunity to get out on the road and visit Community Action Agencies across Ohio. Since joining the association, I have traveled more than 4,000 miles to meet with agency leaders, staff, and community partners, learning firsthand about the incredible work taking place every day in communities across our state.
These visits have given me a deeper understanding of the breadth and impact of the services provided by Community Action Agencies. I have toured housing developments, visited Head Start classrooms, learned about workforce and employment programs, explored food and nutrition initiatives, and met staff helping families navigate everything from utility assistance to financial stability services. While every agency is unique, I have been struck by a common theme wherever I go: a deep passion for helping individuals and families overcome barriers and build stronger futures.
Although I have spent much of my career working in public policy, advocacy, and nonprofit leadership, seeing these programs firsthand has given me an even greater appreciation for the impact Community Action has on the lives of Ohioans. The stories I have heard and the dedication I have witnessed continue to reinforce the importance of our shared mission.
That appreciation came into even sharper focus at our Winter Conference, where I had the opportunity to meet many more members of our network and celebrate the work you accomplish every day. Thank you to everyone who attended and helped make the conference such a success.
As we look ahead to our Summer Conference in Dayton, July 22 to 24, I encourage new Community Action staff, emerging leaders, and anyone interested in reconnecting with the roots of our movement to join us for our pre-conference session on July 21. We are honored to welcome David Bradley, a longtime leader and champion of Community Action, who will share his perspective on the history of the War on Poverty and the enduring role Community Action plays in helping individuals, families, and communities thrive.
I look forward to continuing my travels across Ohio and to seeing many of you in Dayton this July. Thank you for all you do every day to advance the Community Action mission and strengthen communities throughout our state.
