Many Community Action Agencies in Ohio provide low to moderate income housing for families. Miami County Community Action Council has been doing this since 1972.
Housing was the biggest need in Miami County at the time. The problem involved both the availability of housing and the affordability.
In response to that need, the Miami County Community Action Council and Miami County created the Miami Metropolitan Housing Authority through the state. This created a vehicle for development of housing through HUD (Housing and Urban Development) programs.
Over the years the programs grew dramatically. Today they have a Voucher Program of 985 units to address affordability and they have developed three public housing locations with 127 units to address availability.
In addition, the Miami County Community Action Council and Miami Metropolitan Housing Authority developed the first Housing Assistance Plan, which was approved by all jurisdictions within Miami County. The result of the plan enabled private developers to develop 661 additional new housing units for low-income families.
Many of the families in public housing have gone on to become self-sufficient.
